Learn How the Massachusetts Medical
Device Development Center improved
operational efficiency and scientific
reproducibility with Service Insight’s
Insight Platform
Situation
Pamela McGuinness, Director of Laboratory Operations at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, oversees the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2). M2D2 is a critical resource for the state’s smaller medical device companies, offering inventors and executives easy, affordable, and coordinated access to world-class researchers and laboratory infrastructure at the UMass Lowell and the UMass Medical School campuses of the University of Massachusetts.
Operating as an accelerator for medical device and biotech startups, M2D2 is a complex environment with multiple lab spaces, which include several hundred pieces of laboratory instrumentation and equipment. With all of the challenges of managing this multi-tenant environment, Pamela sought a holistic platform to improve operations and better support M2D2’s resident companies. Though M2D2 had previously made a small investment in a simple alerting and monitoring company, the company’s offerings fell short of fully meeting expectations.
“It was great to have a few pieces of equipment remotely monitored and to receive power outage notifications,” said Pamela. “However, I really needed to know things like whether a freezer or CO2 incubator has a problem and which instruments and equipment were most highly utilized.”
Pamela’s solution came in the form of Service Insight. Not only does Service Insight allow its customers the ability to capture all of the key data about the lab environment and equipment, but it also includes the Insight Cloud Dashboard and Insight Mobile App. These features provide complete visibility and accessibility for additional information critical to the laboratory’s operations.
"Service Insight’s Insight Platform is comprehensive. It provides so many more functions than we hadaccess to before. It’s likely that the platform has asolution to whatever situation you want to monitor.”
Solution
Service Insight specializes in providing Internet of Things (IoT) devices and artificial intelligence (AI) models that monitor equipment and report that equipment’s operation status. After examining the needs of M2D2, the Service Insight team supplied recommended collection sensors. They also placed M2D2 on their revolutionary new Insight Platform that helps users monitor, assess, manage, and optimize complex environments.
“Our tenants invest so much of their time and money generating experimental results, so it’s hugely important for them to understand if the equipment is operating within set parameters or not,” said Pamela.
The Insight Platform allows users to track all of the spaces, staff members, and assets of a laboratory. It is the only platform that uses digital twins offering real-time monitoring and optimization capabilities, as well as the Artificial Internet of Things (AIoT) to bring the physical world to digital life. By leveraging the platform, anyone with the appropriate permissions can access a single dashboard providing a comprehensive view of and detailed feedback about the facility.
“What I’m gaining with these sensors and the platform is the powerful ability to remotely check on and monitor the performance and utilization of my equipment while collecting large volumes of operating metrics that will ultimately be able to predict failure,” said Pamela. “Now, I’m enabled to not only manage the lab but also manage our resident companies and their equipment utilization.
Results
Superior Customer Service and Configurable Platform
As a partner to M2D2, Service Insight provides exactly what is needed. “The Service Insight team is very receptive to different requests for me to either get access or to change the view of their dashboard,” said Pamela. “Since the beginning, they’ve been very good to work with.”
Improved Operational
Efficiency That Saves
Time and Money
“The ability to see what the lab’s equipment is doing in real-time is super helpful,” said Pamela. “Having the capability to receive an alarm when either the refrigerator is too warm or the CO₂ incubator is too hot gives me more assurance that our tenants’ investments in their experiments are secure.”
Data and Insights
That Drive Reproducibility
“If a resident company notifies me that there’s a problem, I can check the status of the equipment on my mobile phone using Insight Mobile
from wherever I am. Then I can immediately act on the situation,” said Pamela. “Without Service Insight’s sensors and platform, I wouldn’t be able to provide this level of support.
