Service Insight vs Dickson

Dickson, a logger maker founded in 1923, pairs its hardware with quote-based DicksonOne software, so alarms land in one system while work orders, calibrations and asset history live in another. Service Insight puts open LoRaWAN monitoring, CMMS, calibration and validation on one asset record, with published pricing.

Why teams switch

Monitoring alarms belong on the same record as the maintenance they trigger

Dickson has sold monitoring instruments since 1923, and DicksonOne is built around its loggers, alarms and reports. Service Insight connects every excursion to the asset's work orders, calibrations and validation history in one platform.

The Service Insight approach

  • Open, long-range LoRaWAN. Use Service Insight sensors or bring your own LoRaWAN devices, with multi-year battery life, on one platform.
  • Every alarm on the asset record. Real-time conditions sit next to the asset's work orders and maintenance history, so an excursion can be tracked as a work order on the same record.
  • Calibration for every instrument. As-found and as-left readings, tolerance checks, automatic pass/fail, OOT flags and e-certificates on the asset record, included with Maintain.
  • Published pricing, validation built in. Monitor is $395 per monitored asset per year, Manage is free up to 200 assets, and e-signed IQ/OQ/PQ is included with Maintain.

The point-solution problem

  • Hardware first. Dickson's catalog still spans chart recorders and USB loggers alongside Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and LoRaWAN loggers, positioned for its own DicksonOne or OCEAView software.
  • Alarms, not work orders. DicksonOne's public materials document alarms, dashboards and reports, not asset records or maintenance work orders, so excursions are typically handed off to a separate maintenance system.
  • Calibration centered on Dickson sensors. Dickson's accredited lab recalibrates its own sensors, and DicksonOne records those dates; calibration management for the rest of your instruments is not documented.
  • Quote-based software and services. DicksonOne Basic, Standard and Compliant subscriptions are quoted through sales, and IQ/OQ validation is sold as a separate service package.

About Service Insight

Service Insight is the lab and facility operations platform for biotech and pharma, founded by Anthony Uzzo and James Gregory, who previously founded Core Informatics (LIMS/ELN), acquired by Thermo Fisher Scientific in 2017. Instead of starting from the logger, it starts from the asset: every freezer, incubator, instrument and room has one record that holds its real-time conditions, maintenance history, calibrations and validation documents.

That is what turns monitoring into maintenance. When a -80 freezer drifts, the alarm, the open work orders, the task history and the last calibration are on the same record, so the response is a tracked work order rather than a hand-off between systems. Power, door and occupancy sensors measure active versus idle time, and Cortex turns condition and utilization data into asset health and utilization reports that support condition-based maintenance, with AI maintenance recommendations coming soon.

Monitoring runs on open, long-range LoRaWAN with multi-year battery life, so you can use Service Insight sensors or bring your own LoRaWAN devices. Pricing is public: Monitor is $395 per monitored asset per year, Manage is free up to 200 assets with unlimited users and no per-seat fees, and the Enterprise platform fee starts at $17,000 per year plus capability bundles. See pricing.

About Dickson

Dickson was founded in 1923 in Addison, Illinois, and has spent more than a century making instruments that record environmental conditions. Its catalog still reflects that heritage: chart recorders and USB loggers sit alongside Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and LoRaWAN data loggers, transport loggers and gateways. Dickson says it serves more than 80,000 customers across pharma, biotech, healthcare, distribution, food and beverage and aerospace.

DicksonOne is the software layer for that hardware. It adds dashboards, floor plan views, SMS, phone and email alarms and reports, and Dickson states that it meets 21 CFR Part 11; DicksonOne and OCEAView can also be installed on site. Subscriptions (Basic, Standard and Compliant) are quoted through sales, while accredited sensor calibration, the Calibration Club sensor exchange and IQ/OQ validation are sold as services.

Dickson has changed owners twice since 2018: May River Capital acquired it that year, and Copeland, a Blackstone portfolio company, completed its acquisition in September 2026. Across DicksonOne's public materials, asset management, maintenance work orders and calibration management for non-Dickson instruments are not documented, so those workflows typically stay in a separate system.

Switching from Dickson to Service Insight

  1. Map loggers to assets. List your DicksonOne loggers and match each one to the freezer, incubator or room it watches, and keep your historical reports for your records.
  2. Build the asset registry. Load those assets into Manage with site, building, floor, room and bench locations; Manage is free up to 200 assets.
  3. Run both systems in parallel. Install LoRaWAN sensors and gateways, set alarm thresholds, and keep DicksonOne running until readings and alerts are verified.
  4. Move calibration and maintenance onto the record. Bring calibration schedules, certificates and preventive maintenance into Maintain, and complete validation under your own quality procedures.

What is the best alternative to Dickson for biotech and pharma labs?

Service Insight is the best Dickson alternative for biotech and pharma labs that want monitoring connected to maintenance. It puts open LoRaWAN monitoring, asset management, CMMS, calibration and validation on one asset record, so every alarm sits next to the work orders and calibrations it affects, with published pricing.

Is Service Insight less expensive than Dickson?

Service Insight publishes its software pricing: Monitor is $395 per monitored asset per year, with sensors and gateways quoted separately, and Manage is free up to 200 assets with unlimited users. Dickson publishes logger hardware prices, such as $410 for its LoRaWAN battery-operated logger and $487 for the DicksonOne Display Logger, but its DicksonOne Basic, Standard and Compliant subscriptions are quote-based, and calibration and IQ/OQ validation are sold as services. With Service Insight, CMMS, calibration management and validation come in the same platform rather than as separate purchases.

Can Service Insight replace DicksonOne?

Yes. Service Insight monitors -80 ULT and -20 freezers, refrigerators, LN2 tanks, CO2 incubators, cold rooms and rooms over long-range LoRaWAN, with configurable alarms and a real-time dashboard. It also adds asset management, CMMS, calibration and validation, which DicksonOne's public materials do not document. Teams that use Dickson USB or transport loggers for shipping or warehouse mapping can keep those for that work.

How does Service Insight connect monitoring to maintenance?

Sensor data, alarms, work orders, calibrations and validation records share one asset record, so an excursion leads straight to the asset's maintenance history and a work order. Power, door and occupancy sensors measure utilization, and Cortex asset health and utilization reports help teams move from calendar-based to condition-based maintenance. AI maintenance recommendations are coming soon.

Does Service Insight support 21 CFR Part 11?

Yes. Service Insight validation workflows are built for 21 CFR Part 11 and EU Annex 11, with e-signed IQ/OQ/PQ records, ALCOA+ audit trails and printable validation certificates, on the same asset record as monitoring and calibration. Dickson states that DicksonOne meets 21 CFR Part 11 and sells IQ/OQ validation as a service. With any system, your quality team validates it for its intended use.

How long does switching from Dickson take?

It depends on the number of sites and assets. Because Manage is free up to 200 assets, you can build the asset registry first, then install LoRaWAN sensors and gateways and run Service Insight in parallel with DicksonOne until readings and alarms are verified, before moving calibration and maintenance onto the record.
