Service Insight vs Elemental Machines
Elemental Machines monitors your lab but relies on integrations with separate CMMS tools for work orders, so alarms and maintenance live apart. Service Insight puts monitoring, asset management, CMMS, calibration and validation on one asset record, with published pricing.
Monitoring that feeds your maintenance, not another system to reconcile
Elemental Machines grew up as a sensor and gateway monitoring platform, and maintenance work still runs in other tools. Service Insight connects every excursion to the asset, the work order and the calibration record in one place.
The Service Insight approach
- An alarm, the work order raised for it and the asset's calibration certificate sit on one asset record. Maintain includes preventive and corrective work orders, Kanban boards and vendor, contract and SLA tracking.
- Calibration management for every asset: as-found / as-left readings, tolerance checks with automatic pass/fail, OOT flags, e-certificates on the asset record and NIST-traceable evidence on the work order.
- Published pricing: Monitor is $395 per monitored asset per year, and more sensors on the same asset do not raise the price. Asset management is free up to 200 assets with unlimited users.
- Open, long-range LoRaWAN with multi-year battery life. Use Service Insight devices or bring your own LoRaWAN devices.
The point-solution problem
- Alarms land in Elemental Machines, while work orders live in a separate CMMS connected through API integrations. Native work orders, preventive maintenance workflows and vendor management are not documented in its public materials, even after the August 2026 Resources Manager release.
- Its calibration services cover its own Element-T and Element-A sensors. Resources Manager adds calibration to a shared calendar, but structured as-found / as-left readings, tolerance checks and OOT flags for your equipment are not documented.
- Pricing is quote-based and not published, and analytics are sold in tiers that extend to BI and data science services.
- Sensors connect over short-range Bluetooth Low Energy to a gateway. Labcompare lists the Element-T at 30 meters typical indoor range and a 1 year battery (9 months typical).
Service Insight vs Elemental Machines, capability by capability

About Service Insight
Service Insight is the lab and facility operations platform for biotech and pharma. Asset management (EAM), CMMS, calibration management and environmental, performance and utilization monitoring share one asset record, so when a -80 freezer drifts, the alarm, the corrective work order, the as-found / as-left calibration readings and the e-certificate all land in the same history. There is no hand-off between a monitoring tool and a maintenance tool, because there is only one tool.
Monitor runs on open, long-range LoRaWAN with multi-year battery life, covering LN2 tanks, -80 and -20 freezers, 4C refrigerators, cold rooms, CO2 incubators and rooms, plus leak, door, power and occupancy sensing. Customers can use Service Insight devices or bring their own LoRaWAN devices. Maintain adds preventive and corrective maintenance, Kanban boards, an AI-powered task editor, vendor and SLA tracking, calibration management and IQ/OQ/PQ validation with e-signed records and ALCOA+ audit trails, in workflows built for 21 CFR Part 11 and EU Annex 11.
Because condition and utilization data sit on the same record as the work orders, Cortex turns them into asset health reports, utilization reports and incident context that help teams move from calendar-based to condition-based maintenance, with AI maintenance recommendations coming soon. Pricing is published: Manage is free up to 200 assets with unlimited users, and Monitor is $395 per monitored asset per year. Service Insight was founded by Anthony Uzzo and James Gregory, who previously founded Core Informatics, acquired by Thermo Fisher Scientific in 2017.
About Elemental Machines
Elemental Machines is a privately held company in Cambridge, Massachusetts, built around a sensor and gateway model: battery-powered sensors connect over Bluetooth Low Energy to a gateway that uploads readings over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or cellular. It expanded its monitoring footprint by acquiring TetraScience's Tetra Lab Monitoring business in 2021, and it markets a large library of instrument integrations over Modbus, OPC UA and 4-20 mA outputs.
Over time the company has layered more products onto that monitoring core: tiered analytics that extend to BI and data science services, Elemental Alloy AI agents in January 2026, and Resources Manager in August 2026, which adds an asset and location hierarchy, record storage and a shared calendar for reservations, maintenance and calibration. Its public materials describe API integrations with CMMS, EAM, LIMS and QMS systems rather than native work orders, preventive maintenance workflows or vendor management.
Pricing is not published. Buyers request a quote and a trial kit, then add the systems and services needed to turn monitoring data into maintenance work.
Switching from Elemental Machines to Service Insight
- Build your asset registry. Set up sites, buildings, floors, rooms and benches in Manage and add the equipment you monitor today. Manage is free up to 200 assets.
- Plan LoRaWAN coverage. Map which assets need which devices, such as ULT probes, 4-in-1 incubator monitors or power monitors, and where gateways go. Sensors and gateways are quoted separately.
- Run both systems in parallel. Mirror your alarm thresholds and notification groups, compare readings for a period, then move alarm ownership to Service Insight.
- Retire the hand-off. Turn on Maintain so preventive maintenance, calibration and validation run on the same asset records as your alarms, and new history builds in one place.

What is the best alternative to Elemental Machines?
Service Insight is the best alternative to Elemental Machines for teams that want monitoring and maintenance in one system. It combines real-time environmental and equipment monitoring with asset management, CMMS, calibration management and validation on one asset record, with published pricing. Elemental Machines focuses on monitoring, equipment data and analytics, and its public materials describe integrations with separate CMMS tools for maintenance work orders.
Is Service Insight less expensive than Elemental Machines?
Service Insight publishes its pricing; Elemental Machines does not. Elemental Machines quotes each deployment, offers a trial kit on request and sells analytics in tiers that extend to BI and data science services. Service Insight Monitor is $395 per monitored asset per year, extra sensors on the same asset do not raise the price, and Manage (asset management) is free up to 200 assets with unlimited users and no per-seat fees. Because CMMS and calibration management are part of the same platform, you also avoid running a separate maintenance system alongside monitoring. Sensors and gateways are quoted separately, so compare quotes for the same assets.
Can Service Insight replace Elemental Machines?
Yes. Service Insight monitors LN2 tanks, -80 ULT freezers, -20 freezers, 4C refrigerators, cold rooms, CO2 incubators and rooms, with configurable alarms, a real-time dashboard and a Digital Twin floorplan. Its devices include a self-calibrating ULT probe, a 4-in-1 incubator monitor and leak, door and power sensors. It can also replace the separate CMMS that Elemental Machines integrates with. If you rely on direct digital data feeds from specific instruments, confirm each one during planning.
How does Service Insight connect monitoring to maintenance and enable predictive maintenance?
Every sensor reading, alarm, work order and calibration record sits on the same asset record. When a freezer drifts, the excursion and the corrective work order share one history. Cortex turns condition and sensor-measured utilization data into asset health reports, utilization reports and incident context, so teams can maintain by condition instead of by calendar alone, and AI maintenance recommendations are coming soon. Elemental Machines offers AI agents and a shared maintenance calendar, but native work orders are not documented in its public materials.
Does Service Insight support 21 CFR Part 11?
Yes. Service Insight validation workflows are built for 21 CFR Part 11 and EU Annex 11. Maintain includes IQ/OQ/PQ with e-signed records, ALCOA+ audit trails and printable validation certificates, and calibration records carry as-found / as-left readings and NIST-traceable evidence on the work order. Elemental Machines also states 21 CFR Part 11 support; an EU Annex 11 claim was not found in its public materials.
How long does switching from Elemental Machines take?
It depends on how many assets and sites you monitor and how much gateway coverage you need. Most teams start by building the asset registry in Manage, which is free up to 200 assets, then install LoRaWAN devices and run both systems in parallel before moving alarm ownership. Our team scopes the device plan and timeline with you in a demo.
