Service Insight vs Rees Scientific
Rees Scientific, founded in 1982, sells monitoring as a point solution, with calibration and maintenance delivered as quoted services. Service Insight puts monitoring, asset management, CMMS, calibration and validation on one asset record, with published pricing.
Monitoring that lives on the same record as your maintenance
Rees Scientific sells monitoring hardware, software and on-site services, with work orders and asset history left to other systems. Service Insight connects every alarm to the asset's maintenance, calibration and validation record, at a published price.
The Service Insight approach
- Monitoring, asset management, CMMS, calibration and validation share one asset record, so an alarm, its work order and the asset's last calibration sit in one place.
- Calibration and validation are software records on each asset: as-found / as-left readings, automatic pass/fail, OOT flags, e-certificates and IQ/OQ/PQ with e-signatures, whoever performs the work.
- An open, long-range LoRaWAN network with multi-year battery life that accepts Service Insight devices or LoRaWAN devices you already own.
- Published pricing: $395 per monitored asset per year, with the Manage asset registry free up to 200 assets and no per-seat fees.
The point-solution problem
- Rees Helix and Centron Presidio are monitoring software. Rees's public materials do not describe an asset registry, work orders or CMMS, so excursions typically become a manual hand-off to a separate maintenance system.
- Calibration, validation (IQ/OQ/PQ) and preventive maintenance are sold as on-site services by Rees technicians, tying that work to the monitoring vendor's service engagement.
- Hardware follows a wired, Zigbee and Wi-Fi design built around Rees sensors and modules, and Rees publishes a 1.5-year battery life for its wireless modules.
- Pricing is not published, so hardware, software, installation and services all come through a quote and total cost is hard to see before a sales process.
Service Insight vs Rees Scientific, capability by capability

About Service Insight
Service Insight is the lab and facility operations platform for biotech and pharma. Monitoring is not a separate system: sensor data, alarms, maintenance work orders, calibration results and validation records all sit on the same asset record. When a freezer drifts out of range, its last calibration, open work orders and service vendor are already in front of the person responding, with no manual hand-off between tools.
Monitor runs on an open, long-range LoRaWAN network with multi-year battery life, and Service Insight cites up to 10x the range and battery life of typical short-range lab sensors. You can use Service Insight devices or LoRaWAN devices you already own. Manage adds the asset registry, hierarchical locations and scheduling, and Maintain adds preventive and corrective work orders, vendor management, calibration and IQ/OQ/PQ validation built for 21 CFR Part 11 and EU Annex 11.
Because condition and utilization data stream onto the same record as the work orders, Cortex can turn them into asset health and utilization reports that let teams maintain by condition instead of by calendar. Pricing is published: Monitor is $395 per monitored asset per year and Manage is free up to 200 assets. See pricing.
About Rees Scientific
Rees Scientific was founded in 1982 in Trenton, New Jersey, and has spent more than four decades selling environmental monitoring systems to regulated labs, pharma and hospitals. AEA Investors' small business private equity fund acquired the company in 2022. Rees says it serves 90% of the top 50 pharmaceutical companies and 75% of the top 50 biotech companies.
Its system grew out of wired, server-based monitoring. The Centron Presidio server scales to 12,800 inputs, wired systems can run on your own network or ReesCloud, and wireless options use Rees's Z3 Zigbee and ReesLink Wi-Fi modules with a published 1.5-year battery life. The newer Rees Helix software adds cloud dashboards, facility maps, single sign-on and scheduled reports.
Rees is bought the way monitoring systems traditionally were: a quoted project with design, installation, calibration, validation and preventive maintenance delivered as services by its regional technicians, backed by 24/7/365 support. Its public materials describe monitoring software and those services, not an asset registry or CMMS, so maintenance work and asset history are typically managed in a separate system.
Switching from Rees Scientific to Service Insight
- Build your asset registry first. Load your equipment into Manage, free up to 200 assets, with locations from site down to room and bench. Every sensor, work order and calibration record then has a home.
- Map monitoring points to assets. List each Rees monitoring point and the equipment or room it covers, then choose Service Insight devices or your own LoRaWAN devices for each one. Sensors and gateways are quoted separately.
- Run both systems in parallel. Keep Rees alarms live while the new sensors collect data, compare readings and alarm behavior, and export historical readings and reports from Rees for your records.
- Move calibration and validation onto the asset record. Schedule calibration and IQ/OQ/PQ work in Maintain so future results, certificates and audit trails sit with each asset. Talk to our team about timing.

What is the best alternative to Rees Scientific?
Service Insight is the best alternative to Rees Scientific for biotech and pharma labs that want monitoring connected to maintenance. It runs real-time monitoring on long-range LoRaWAN and puts every alarm on the same asset record as asset management, CMMS work orders, calibration and validation. Rees sells monitoring hardware and software, with calibration, validation and preventive maintenance delivered as services, and its public materials do not describe asset management or CMMS software.
Is Service Insight less expensive than Rees Scientific?
Service Insight publishes its prices, and Rees Scientific does not. Service Insight Monitor is $395 per monitored asset per year, multiple sensors on the same asset do not raise that price, sensors and gateways are quoted separately, and Manage is free up to 200 assets with unlimited users. Rees's hardware, software, installation and services come through a quote, so you can see Service Insight's monitoring cost before you talk to sales and compare it with a Rees quote.
Can Service Insight replace Rees Scientific?
Yes. Service Insight monitors LN2 tanks, -80 ULT freezers, -20 freezers, refrigerators, cold rooms, CO2 incubators and rooms with configurable alarms, and adds the asset management and CMMS that Rees does not describe in its software. Calibration and validation work by your own staff or service vendors is recorded in Maintain, with vendor contracts, coverage and SLA performance on the same record. Running both systems in parallel before cutover is the safest path.
How does Service Insight connect monitoring to maintenance?
Sensor data, alarms, work orders, calibration results and validation records all live on the same asset record, so an excursion leads straight to the asset's maintenance history and open work. Power, door and occupancy sensors measure active vs idle time, and Cortex turns that data into asset health and utilization reports, so teams can move from calendar-based preventive maintenance to maintenance based on condition. AI maintenance recommendations in Cortex are coming soon.
Does Service Insight support 21 CFR Part 11?
Yes. Service Insight validation workflows are built for 21 CFR Part 11 and EU Annex 11, with IQ/OQ/PQ e-signed records, ALCOA+ audit trails and printable validation certificates. Calibration results, including as-found / as-left readings, automatic pass/fail, OOT flags and e-certificates, sit on the same asset record as the monitoring data.
How long does switching from Rees Scientific take?
Timing depends on how many assets you monitor, and most of the work is planning rather than installation. You can load your equipment into Manage first, free up to 200 assets, then map each Rees monitoring point to an asset and add battery-powered LoRaWAN sensors without new wiring. Keep Rees alarms live while both systems run in parallel, then cut over once readings and alarms match. Talk to our team for a plan sized to your sites.
